The Bass Family - Beverly Bass - Influential Fort Myers Family
Bass Road runs north and south from Gladiolus Drive in Fort Myers, FL. The Bass Family has several influentual members. Shep Bass was one of the city of Fort Myers' early Fire Chiefs. The family owned property from McGregor Blvd just south of the Buddha near the College Parkway flyover. One of the Bass wives was born a Miles, as in Miles Laboratory, which was known for the invention of Alka-Seltzer.

Another relative, Beverly Bass the daughter of Marg and Robert Bass was the first female to attain the rank of Captain for American Airlines. Bev flew the inaugural flight in to Southwest Regional Airport back in 1983. She later was the captain on an American Airlines flight from Paris to Dallas on September 11, 2001. When the attacks began on the World Trade Center she was ordered to land her plane in Gander, Newfoundland. From this tiny airport and events from this famous day, the Broadway play “Come From Away” came to be. This play highlights the career of Bev and the events that transpired on 9/11.
